5 Ways to Earn Your Employees' Trust
Trust is a foundational element (or at least it should be) of every strong relationship- friendships, romantic partnerships, families, and even in workplace relationships.
If your team is not performing how you would like, ask yourself this: Have I built a strong foundation of trust with my team? Great leadership begins with a foundation of trust.
Here are 5 ways to earn your employee's trust:
Get to Know Your Employees as People. Don’t just treat your employees as car wash robots. They are people with lives outside of work, other interests, families, and goals. Get to know who they are outside of the car wash uniform. Ask them about their families, their hobbies, their goals, and other life events. And then, follow up! Next time you have a meeting with John you can ask him “How did your son’s big baseball tournament go?” You might be surprised at how shocked and appreciative he is that you remembered and cared enough to ask.
Do What You Say You Are Going to Do. Be a person of your word. If you say “I will look into a raise for you” or “I will order new uniforms” or “I will bring up that issue in the next team meeting” then DO IT. Employees notice quickly when you continue to make empty promises.
Be Consistent. Enforce the same standards for every employee. If you write Sally up because she was late for work but turn a blind eye when Jane shows up late, your employees will assume favoritism which quickly erodes trust. Consistency breeds fairness and fairness breeds trust.
Give Feedback Regularly- Not Just When Things Go Wrong. If your employees only hear from you when they make mistakes, they will begin to resent and avoid you. Notice the good things, offer quick praise, and provide consistent coaching to help employees grow.
Invest in Their Growth. See your employees not just for who they are today but what they can become.Understand their career goals, teach them new skills, and give them leadership opportunities. If an employee's long-term goals extend beyond the car wash, support them in getting there! Helping people grow—even if it eventually leads them to another opportunity—is one of the most powerful ways to earn their trust and loyalty.
Trust isn't built through a single conversation or interaction—it's earned through the small, consistent actions you take every day. When employees trust their leader, they're more engaged, more willing to take ownership, and more committed to the team's success. If you want better performance, stronger retention, and a healthier culture, start by building trust.
